The ALEX “SLIV” NEMZEK Owl Legacy Man of the Year Awardis an annual honor that recognizes a football player for outstanding achievements both on and off the field. Established in 2024, the award is named after the late Alex “Sliv” Nemzek, a distinguished figure in the history of North Dakota State University (NDSU) and Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) athletics.
Alex “Sliv” Nemzekwas a pioneer in college sports, serving as a team captain for NDSU in 1916. His athletic career was marked by interruptions due to military service on the Mexican border in 1916 and participation in both World Wars. In 1919, Nemzekbecame the 152nd member of the prestigious Old Order of the Owls Men’s Organization. He went on to become the Athletic Director at MSUM for 19 years, where he also coached football and basketball. His leadership extended beyond sports, as he served as the mayor of Moorhead from 1948 to 1949. His legacy is honored through the MSUM athletic complex, named after him, and his induction as the first member of the Dragon Hall of Fame in 1961.
This award celebrates Alex “Sliv” Nemzek’slegacy of leadership, community impact, and athletic excellence. Each year, the head football coach of the MSUM Dragons selects a player who has made a significant positive impact on the team and in the community, embodying the values and spirit of Alex “Sliv” Nemzekand the Old Order of the Owls. The Old Order of the Owls partners with the university and the athletic department to promote leadership and uphold the values that Nemzekchampioned.
Eligibility for the award extends to all team members, whether a starter or not. The recipient will be honored during Homecoming festivities of the following year and will receive a token of remembrance. Additionally, a donation will be made to the MSUM athletic department in the winner’s name. The ALEX “SLIV” NEMZEK Owl Legacy Man of the Year Awardstands as a testament to the qualities of leadership, dedication, and service that Alex “Sliv” Nemzekexemplified throughout his life.
