The Owl Legacy Foundation is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of the Old Order of Owls at Minnesota State University – Moorhead (MSUM).








Each year, the Owl Legacy Foundation invests in programs that strengthen Minnesota State Univeritty Moorhead, support the next generation of leaders, serve our communities, and stand beside our brothers when they need us its most.
Our initial annual impact goal is $100,000 for 2027.

The Alex “Sliv” Nemzek Owl Legacy Man of the Year Award, established in 2024, honors a football player for outstanding achievements on and off the field. It celebrates Nemzek’s legacy of leadership, community impact, and athletic excellence. Each year, the Owl Legacy Foundation partners with the MSUM head football coach to select a player who embodies the values and spirit of Nemzek and the Old Order of the Owls. The recipient is honored at Homecoming, with a donation made to the MSUM athletic department in their name, reflecting Nemzek’s lifelong dedication to leadership and service.



A record-setting quarterback and consummate team leader, Jack Strand has transformed Minnesota State Moorhead football into one of the premier programs in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) while embodying the true spirit of the student-athlete. The Bloomer, Wisconsin, native becomes the second NFF National Scholar-Athlete from the Dragons program and the first since 1998. Excelling in the classroom, Strand maintains a 3.87 GPA as an engineering physics major. A 2024 CSC Second Team Academic All-American and two-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, Strand claimed the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award and was selected as a 2024 NCAA Division II 50th Anniversary Scholarship recipient in 2024.

The Governor’s Ball was originally created as a formal event. Over time it evolved into Moorhead State’s biggest party. In it’s current form Governor’s Ball will be critical yearly event allowing Owl Alumni to connect and define Owl Legacy foundation initiatives.

The creation of the Owls Legacy Foundation allows the Old Order of Owls alumni to reconnect with the University through Owl Legacy foundation membership. Whether you’re a current student, faculty member, or someone from the broader community, we invite you to become part of the rich heritage of the Old Order of Owls at Minnesota State University – Moorhead as an Owl Legacy Foundation member. By joining the Owl Legacy Foundation, you’ll gain access to exclusive Owl events, special merchandise, and a unique insider view of many of our cherished traditions and history. While we can’t promise a full initiation into the mysteries of the Order, you can enjoy the camaraderie and community spirit that has defined the Owls for generations—without the need for that pesky initiation ceremony! Join fellow Owls for a weekend of tradition, connection, and fellowship at Radar’s Rendezvous, hosted by Brother Mike “Radar” Rein and Renee in New Prague, Minnesota. The weekend includes golf, shared meals, the Owl Legacy Foundation Annual Meeting, and the always-popular Meet the Actives gathering—bringing together generations of Owls in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
