The Owl Legacy Foundation is committed to preserving the rich tradition and spirit of Minnesota State University - Moorhead oldest and most prestigious men's fraternal organization.
The Old Order of Owls were a Men’s Fraternal Organization originally founded in 1897 and formally recognized by Moorhead Teacher’s College in 1901. The Owls were an integral part of the university, campus leadership, athletics, students activities throughout it’s existence.
The Owl presence is everywhere on campus from the distinguished MSUM Alumni, to names on buildings, to the Owls statues that look down on you as you enter those buildings. When you walk on one of the eight paths that converge at the center of campus, know the Eternal Owl Spirit is with you. The design was not a coincidence.
The Owl Legacy Foundation is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of the Old Order of Owls at Minnesota State University – Moorhead (MSUM).
The Alex “Sliv” Nemzek Owl Legacy Man of the Year Award, established in 2024, honors a football player for outstanding achievements on and off the field. It celebrates Nemzek’s legacy of leadership, community impact, and athletic excellence. Each year, the Owl Legacy Foundation partners with the MSUM head football coach to select a player who embodies the values and spirit of Nemzek and the Old Order of the Owls. The recipient is honored at Homecoming, with a donation made to the MSUM athletic department in their name, reflecting Nemzek’s lifelong dedication to leadership and service.
The Owl Legacy Foundation is proud to announce the establishment of the “Owl Legacy Foundation Athlete of the Year” award. This honor recognizes an exceptional athlete at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) who exemplifies outstanding performance both on and off the field. The Owl Legacy Foundation Man of the Year Award will be presented annually to an MSUM athlete who demonstrates excellence in their sport, academic achievements, and a commitment to community service. This award seeks to celebrate the holistic development of student-athletes who not only excel in their athletic endeavors but also embody the values of leadership, integrity, and dedication to making a positive impact in their community.
Recipients of this award will have shown exceptional character and sportsmanship, contributed significantly to their team’s success, and engaged in meaningful community service activities. The Owl Legacy Foundation aims to inspire all MSUM athletes to strive for greatness in all areas of their lives, fostering a legacy of excellence and service.
The Governor’s Ball was originally created as a formal event. Over time it evolved into Moorhead State’s biggest party. In it’s current form Governor’s Ball will be critical yearly event allowing Owl Alumni to connect and define Owl Legacy foundation initiatives.
